English Summary
What OK is All About
That’s what we learned at the Martin Van Buren National Historic Site near Kinderhook in the northern Hudson River Valley. Van Buren, the 8th U.S. president (1837 – 1841), is the subject of a number of Firsts – the only president whose native language was not English, the first president born an American who was of Dutch descent. And the only one who inspired a term that can be found in a dictionary today – because he popularized OK, which stands for Old Kinderhook, his birthplace and near where he lived after his presidency.
