English Summary

Lava Balls and Pele’s hair in the Ka’u Desert (Hawai’i Island)

My first hike in Hawai’i Volcanoes National Park during my visit in March took me to a historically significant area – the Ka’u Desert. Important trade routes crossed here, which were also used in military conflicts. At the end of the 18th century, there was a battle for supremacy on the island between King Keoua, who ruled the south, and King Kamehameha, who ruled the north of the island.  Both kings wanted to take over the eastern kingdom of Hilo. They clashed in the Ka’u Desert. During this time, Kilauea erupted and the ash buried many of the warriors.

My goal was the so-called lava balls. They are formed when large, cooler chunks break off the side of a lava flow, flow with it and are moved back and forth. Lava always sticks until a ‘ball’ is finally formed.

Put on my warm clothes – put on my camera and cell phone – check in and get weighed so that the helicopter can be balanced – briefing on the helicopter flight – then a short drive to the heliport at Kahului airport – put on my life jacket in case of the unlikely event – getting final instructions – get in and buckle up – and off we go into the air. At first I’m not so sure about it – at around 3.000 ft I can feel the wind, the clouds and the raindrops as the helicopter has no doors. But after some minutes I can enjoy the flight. So get on board and see Kaua’i from above, flown clockwise – south-west-north-east starting at Lihu’e Airport.

English Summary

Papawai Point and McGregor Lighthouse on Maui

A short drive took us to the west coast of the island of Maui. You are supposed to be able to see whales from Papawai Point. But unfortunately there were none today, which I can imagine – because there are several boats with tourists out lurking for the whales. The three neighboring islands – Kaho’owale, Lanai und Moloka’i – can be seen in the haze.

From McGregor Point and Lighthouse, which was first built in the 1880s at the entrance to Ma’alaea Bay, you have a good view of the bay. Today’s lighthouse dates from 1915 and stands 72 ft above the sea.

The Mountain Slopes of Hawai’I Island – Home of Kona Coffee (Hawai’i Island)

I found out more about this when I visited the coffee plantation, Heavenly Hawaiian Kona Coffee. Even getting there was an adventure, as the road up the mountainside from the HI 180 is quite narrow. And the turn-off is so inconspicuous that I drove past it at first. At the top, i.e. at an altitude of around 1.950 ft, I would have had a good view of the coast if it weren’t for the vog, the volcanic smog. On the tour, I immerse myself in a completely different world and learn a lot about coffee cultivation.

Painted Churches – St. Benedict und Star of the Sea

English Summary

Painted Churches – St. Benedict und Star of the Sea

I am now back home in Germany and this story is the prelude to more from my trip to Hawai’i.

I saw two beautifully painted churches on Hawai’i Island – St. Benedict Church, which overlooks Kealakekua Bay. The current church was built in 1899 by Father John Velghe. Without knowing how to apply paint to a normal house, he embellished the church with his paintings. In the south-east of the island, I came across the equally beautifully painted Star of the Sea church.

Zurück in Kalifornien

Back in California

After a five-hour flight from Lihue on Kaua’i, I landed back on the American mainland in San Francisco. I spend a few more days in Sacramento before heading back to Germany. Today there are a few pictures from the flight. But there is still a lot to tell about the islands I visited. So you can look forward to more stories and pictures from Hawai’i in the near future, even though I’ll already be back home and at work.

English Summary

Grand Canyon of the Pacific – the Waimea Canyon on Kaua’i

10 miles long, 1 mi wide and approx. 3,600 ft deep, it is cut into four million year old lava rock. The culprits: the Waimea Stream and many other small rivers, creeks and countless waterfalls. Waimea means ‘reddish water’ in Hawaiian; the color comes from iron which is present throughout the island. I also had the opportunity to see the canyon from the air.

English Summary

An Extraordinary Cemetery

I visited one such cemetery today on ‚O’ahu – at the Pearl Harbor National Memorial to be precise. This memorial commemorates the Japanese attack on the US Air Force and US Navy bases on the Hawaiian island of ‚O’ahu, in particular Pearl Harbor, in the early morning of December 7, 1941, which sealed the USA’s entry into the Second World War. A visit to the USS Arizona Memorial was something special for me. It is built over the sunken battleship, that commemorates the 1,177 soldiers who lost their lives when the ship sank after a bomb hit the ship, penetrated the deck, exploded in the ammunition depot and sank in less than nine minutes – a truly extraordinary cemetery.

English Summary

On the “house of the sun”, the Haleakala

I divide the journey from sea level to the summit into several stages: Breakfast at an altitude of just under 3.000 ft, a first stop at around 6,000 ft, then a stop at the visitor center at just over 7,000 ft, then more stops at viewpoints until I am finally virtually above the clouds and standing on the windswept, 10,032 ft high Pu’u ‚ula’ula, the red hill, with a magnificent view to the south and into the crater of Haleakala, which means “house of the sun” in Hawaiian. Clouds are moving up from Kaupo Gap, which unfortunately do not reveal the entire view.

English Summary

An Open Airport – Kona International Airport

Arriving from San Francisco in the evening shortly before 8 p.m.: I can’t see a hall, everything is open and the only thing protecting the baggage carousel from the light rain is the roof. I almost can’t believe it.

Ten days later, I fly on to Kahului on Maui and it’s confirmed: everything really is open, just a protective roof – the check-in counters and baggage drop-off are open and there’s a breeze from the ocean; even the security checkpoint is open on two sides. Passengers walk to and from the plane to the gate on paths marked with barrier pylons. Here are some impressions.

English Summary

Morning Concert in the Kipukapuaulu

I got up early again today and at 7:30 I was already at the starting point for a hike through a kipuka (an elevated area that has not been covered by lava). Many native plants grow here, but also many invasive ones, which are removed as far as possible to restore the natural state. I am walking alone and so I can enjoy the magnificent bird concert that accompanies me on the entire 1.2 km loop. Here are a few impressions.

Mein Gedanke, da muss was los sein.

English Summary

Getting Up EarlyIis Worth It – Halema’uma’u Crater Eruption

At 4 a.m. someone sneaks through the corridor in the hotel. My thought: there must be something going on. The view from my hotel room confirms it – the crater is active again, although there are no large lava fountains, but it’s better than nothing. I get dressed, grab the camera and head out – unfortunately too far away. At 6 a.m. it is still active and well worth seeing at dusk. An other eruption is expected tonight or tomorrow. I’m hoping for tomorrow and not too early 😊.

25 + 25 = 50 = Hawai’i

English Summary

Wondering what the numbers mean? Here is the answer:

– Hawai’i became the 50th state of the USA in 1959

– I am visiting the 50th state in 2025

– It’s my 25th trip to the USA

I first flew from Frankfurt to San Francisco and then on to Kailua-Kona, which greeted me with rain. The airport is a surprise and quite unlike any airport I’ve seen before. But more on that when I leave Hawai’i Island at the end of next week. Here are a few pictures from the flight to San Francisco, it was already dark on the approach to Kailua-Kona.

English Summary

Einzigartige Steinformationen (Valley of Fire Teil 1)

English Summary

Unique Rock Formations (Valley of Fire Part 1)

The 46,000 acres area got its name because the red sandstone ‚glows‘ intensely red depending on the light. The sandstone was formed around 150 million years ago from an area of large sand dunes. Over the course of millions of years, the dunes were covered by other material and solidified into stone due to their weight. Iron oxide penetrated and is responsible for the intense red color today. Faulting caused the layers to be lifted and tilted, weathering removed the upper layers again and the red sandstone was revealed.
